Cavity wall and Loft insulation

The Project:
Eaga were awarded a contract to work in partnership with East Sussex County Council to assist local schools and colleges to fund energy efficiency measures via the Salix Finance Scheme.

The Ringmer Community College was approached to be one of the first colleges in the area to pilot the scheme. Eaga carried out a an energy audit on the college building, which involved making recommendations for energy efficiency measures and a report which identified the costs savings the college would make by carrying out the improvements. The survey identified that the main building at Ringmer did not have any cavity wall insulation present, and the loft insulation was not recommended depth of 280mm, and therefore valuable heat will be escaping through the wall and roof of the building.

The college, which caters for 800 students aged 11-16, is already widely recognised for their approach to sustainability and have been honoured by a number of prestigious environmental awards, including the Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy.

To identify where the college could save money, Eaga carried out an energy audit which involved making recommendations for energy efficiency measures and identified the additional costs savings the college would make by carrying out the insulation improvements. The survey identified that the college building at Ringmer, which dated back to the 1950's did not have any cavity wall insulation, and the loft insulation was not to the recommended depth of 270 mm, as such valuable heat was escaping through the walls and roof of the building.

The report identified that by carrying out these simple insulation measures the college have an installed payback of approx 3.5 years, and have reduced their carbons emissions by approx 53 tonnes per year.

Steve Green, Environmental Coordinator, Ringmer Community College said:  "Having effective energy saving systems in place is regarded by the College as key to our achievements in reducing carbon emissions and saving money, and with the support from The Salix Finance Scheme and Eaga it has helped us make further savings, and greater carbon reductions across the college.

We have been extremely pleased with the work carried out by Eaga.  Their flexible approach ensured the job was completed during the half term with minimum disruption to staff and students - Staff and pupils are already feeling the benefits of much warmer classrooms after just a few weeks back, so much so they are now having to turn radiators off!"
